The New VW Up! Named 2012 World Car of the Year (05-16-2012)
Yes, the vehicle is so spectacular that the company decided to add an exclamation mark for emphasis! In the fall of 2011, the Volkswagen Up! was formally introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The hatchback vehicle looks similar to a cross between a small car and a minivan. After being unveiled, it was soon viewed as one of the most intriguing cars and as one of the most exciting European vehicles. The received rating was based on overall appeal regarding safety, value, appearance and environmental responsibility. This little car was also the inspiration for the Seat Mii and the Skoda Citigo. It is also expected to be a template for future models.
In recent months, international journalists gave this vehicle the 2012 Car of the Year award. Volkswagen has won three out of the past four Car of the Year awards. In 2010, the Volkswagen Polo received the award, and the Golf brought home the honorable distinction in 2009. Other German-made winners include the Porsche 911, named World Performance Car of the Year. The World Green Car of the Year award went to the Blue Efficiency Mercedes Benz S 250 CDI.
The Volkswagen Up! is only a Euro and Australian model for now, but many consumers hope to see this product on American soil. Only time will tell if VW will decide to expand the current market for this recognized vehicle and deliver this popular product to the masses.
